The Southern Districts Kennel and Obedience Dog Club Inc will teach you by the world’s best practice, to train your dog to become a well mannered, happy, appreciated and accepted member of your family and an animal that is easily acceptable in the wider community.

We will teach you how to have your dog:
Walk Quietly by your side without tugging on the lead
Sit quietly whilst being patted
Behave in the company of other dogs
Come promptly when called
Obey your commands immediately

Dog training is continual. There are no semesters, and you and your dog may begin training at any time between the first Sunday in February and the last Sunday in November. A NEW MEMBER’S CLASS IS CONDUCTED EVERY SUNDAY. Remember though, we do not train your dog, we teach you to train your dog.

You train at your own speed. How fast your dog learns will depend entirely on how much effort you put into training your dog. Your Instructor will appraise your dog’s progress every six weeks and if you have worked well with your dog and are following the instructor’s directions, your dog will “go up a grade” (this is termed “Graduation”) until it graduates from grade 4 with a TRAINED DOG CERTIFICATE

You may train ANY dog of ANY age. It is never too late to start training a dog, although the younger a dog is, the easier it is to train. Cross-bred dogs are just as welcome as thoroughbred dogs but we do have a club rule that children under the age of twelve will not be allowed to train or handle a dog whilst on the clubs premises

Puppies are accepted two weeks after they have had their vaccination against DISTEMPER, HEPATITIS, PARVO VIRUS and KENNEL COUGH (Kennel Cough is optional but recommended). This means that we cannot receive dogs for training until they are twelve weeks old. Dogs vaccinated with Homeopathic/Naturopathic vaccines will only be admitted after the owner signs a document indemnifying the club against any claim due to the animal contracting any of the diseases normally protected by vaccines which have undergone clinical trials.

Only the member can train the dog in club classes. The dog is not the member, the handler is. Members and friends of the trainer’s family are encouraged to watch the dogs training from the edge of the training area but are not allowed in the training arena.
WE OPERATE A SMALL CANTEEN DURING TRAINING TIMES

We operate a small canteen at every training session with tea, coffee, soft drinks, soup and chocolates etc. On Sundays we have a sausage sizzle during the training period.

Classes are conducted in showery weather. On the very rare occasions that the rain is too heavy to train, training may be cancelled. However, if the temperature is above 32º in the Noarlunga area, training will be cancelled for that day.

Guard dog training is not undertaken by the club.

A class which teaches the basic principles of SHOWING your dog is conducted weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7.00 pm.

MEMBERSHIP is on an annual basis. Our financial year ends at the end of November. No training occurs after the last week of November, and we begin training again in the first week of February. Subscriptions for the next year are due on the first week of February each year.

We are located on the South Western corner of the WILFRED TAYLOR reserve at Morphett Vale. There is adequate car parking and entry to the club premises is from Wheatsheaf Road approximately 150 metres east of the States Road/Wheatsheaf Road roundabout.

The training times for puppies (animals up to 7 months old) and beginners (animals over 7 months old that have not had any obedience training) are 9.00am on Sunday Mornings. New members should attend at 8.45 on Sunday mornings to enroll.

New members attending for the first time are obliged to undergo an orientation lesson and have the Club’s rules explained. We call this our INTRODUCTORY CLASS and it is conducted at 9.00am every Sunday

Our other classes, i.e. grade 1 and 2 are conducted from 10.00 am on Sundays; grades 3 and 4 are from 11.00am on Sundays. All grades from puppies through to grade 5 may also attend training on Wednesday evenings at 7pm.

For higher grades, i.e. grade 5 (Novice), 6 (Open), and 7 (Utility), - please contact the Head Instructor as the times may be altered to suit the availability of training staff.

Agility and jumping classes are conducted most Sundays from 9.00am (weather permitting), through to 12.00. Dogs must be a minimum of 15 months old and must have completed grade 4 and attained a “Trained Dog” certificate before it can participate in an agility class
